Dr Liam Mooney

Clinical Psychologist

I am an HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist with experience supporting neurodivergent people and people with intellectual disabilities, across a range of NHS Learning Disability Services in Scotland. I have worked with young people and adults in community, inpatient and Behaviour Support/Crisis Intervention settings, providing specialist psychological assessment and intervention for neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism and ADHD, as well as a range of mental health and relational difficulties.

Alongside my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and MSc in Psychological Therapy in Primary Care, I hold a Professional Diploma in Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) and have additional training in Behavioural Family Therapy.

I enjoy the variety of my work, in particular I value helping people develop a better understanding of themselves and their experiences. I am interested in looking beyond behaviour itself, to understand what it may be communicating, particularly when behaviour is difficult, distressing or misunderstood by others. I support people to identify meaningful ways to build on their own strengths to bring about positive change.

My approach to therapy is collaborative, strengths-based and grounded in evidence-based psychological approaches. I recognise that everyone’s experiences are different, and aim to provide a supportive and non-judgemental space where people feel understood and heard.

My work integrates Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), PBS as well as trauma-informed and systemic approaches. I adapt these to the individual and to the context in which they are living.
